118 Cuba Street, Te Aro, Wellington
With a rainbow awning, pink plastic flamingoes guarding the front doors, and giant inflatable T-Rex above the threshold, Iko Iko makes an impression.
Since 1997 the Cuba Street shop has been providing solutions for the search for the perfect gift. From sunglasses and socks to candles, cushions, ceramics, books, and toys, Iko Iko’s shelves are brimming with possibilities.
Maximalism is the theme, with every visual space filled with funky finds. Much of the stock is New Zealand-made, so it’s a great spot to find a fun memento of the capital. Last-minute gifts are also an easy find. Gift wrapping is complimentary.
Iko Iko is well-known for its cheeky posters, greeting cards, and stickers. Designed in-house, the unique creations feature celebrities and pop culture references. There’s also a healthy dose of Frida Kahlo, courtesy of owner Thomasin Bollinger. She, along with her daughter Rose, co-owns the store and hand-picks the eclectic stock. They share a love for Frida Kahlo and all things Mexican. You’ll find Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) themed products dotted around the store.
Iko Iko always has fun window displays, and they are an attraction on their own. Seasonally themed, they feature Iko Iko’s products and often tell a story or message.
