Eastbourne and Days Bay

Perched on the eastern edge of Wellington Harbour, these quaint coastal suburbs are a popular day-trip destination. They have sandy sheltered beaches, colourful cafés, cute boutiques, and lots of scenic trails. 

It’s an easy commute to get across the harbour. East by West ferries sail between Days Bay and Wellington daily. Jump onboard Ika Rere, the first electric ferry in the Southern Hemisphere, for the quick journey.

Although a popular year-round destination, the area comes to life in summer. The waterfront walkways are buzzing with dog walkers, cyclists, and walkers. Beachgoers vie for the best sunbathing spots. The sheltered waters of the harbour entice keen swimmers, kayakers, and paddle boarders. Friends and families picnic on the shores, kids jump off the wharf, and locals enjoy a refreshing swim. On a clear day, views extend across to Wellington City and all the way to the South Island.  

Set in the hills behind Eastbourne and Days Bay, East Harbour Regional Park is full of scenic walking trails. These range from gentle strolls to challenging uphill hikes. The iconic Butterfly Creek track is one of the oldest trails in the area. Weave through dense native bush to a lookout offering huge views across the harbour before descending into the lush valley below. For a memorable ride, hire a bike from Wildfinder and make the journey to Pencarrow Lighthouse. The blustery 8km journey along the rugged coastline is worth it for the stunning vistas.

The charming villages of Eastbourne and Days Bay offer a welcome respite after a day’s exploring. Relax at one of the welcoming cafés or restaurants, or browse the charming boutiques, artisan supply stores, and art galleries.
