Wainuiomata

Tucked within the Remutaka Range and fringed by a rocky coastline is Wainuiomata. Covered in greenery and native bush, its landscape provides plenty of opportunity for mountain biking, bush walks, and encounters with native wildlife.

The remote Wainuiomata Coast is a great place to spend a day exploring. Just a short walk or bike ride along the jagged shoreline will lead you to Turakirae Head. Here, the rocky terraces and harsh natural environment provide a thriving habitat for native flora and fauna. You can see banded dotterels, Caspian terns, skinks, and geckos. Every winter around 500 fur seals settle in to see out the cooler months. These marine mammals may appear friendly, but make sure you keep a safe distance. After you’ve met the locals, continue along a coastal trail to the historic Baring Head Lighthouse. On a clear day, its vantage point provides views across to the South Island.

Wainuiomata’s Jurassic-like Remutaka Forest Park is full of beautiful bush walks. Trek through lush landscapes on short day walks, or camp overnight in the Ōrongorongo Valley. You’ll walk beneath ancient rainforests, cross rocky river valleys, and traverse unique terrain. You might even get lucky and hear the call of the elusive kiwi at night.

The bushy hills surrounding Wainuiomata are a magnet for thrill-seeking mountain bikers. Developed by passionate locals, Waiu Park has earned a reputation for its challenging downhill runs. There’s mud, berms, jumps, and unexpected twists and turns to get your blood pumping. The park also features gentle tracks and a skills area for beginners.
