    Rosella

Extending up past the Embassy Theatre, Marjoribanks Street has a clutch of intimate eateries offering great food and service. Rosella, housed in a two-storied 1886 house, adds a little bit of exotic charm to the surrounding hospitality businesses. Co-owned by Johnon MacDonald and Kat Strand, Rosella capitalises on big, bold, fresh flavours. Johnon’s food takes its inspiration from the Mediterranean, Middle East, and North Africa. The serving style is modern with a share-style approach. Each dish is served on plates handmade by local Island Bay potter Nicola Shuttleworth.

“It’s the perfect backdrop for your dinner dates, catch-ups with mates, and long weekend lunches.”

With steamed butterfish, pickled mussels, and sugar-cured king salmon, the menu plays a strong hand in seafood. For those less inclined, the menu also excels with land-based offerings. Johnon and Kat also own Koji, a restaurant a few doors down the street. He says, “We’re keeping the relaxed service and incredible food of Koji, but adding tap cocktails.” On top of the cocktails, Rosella boasts a wine list that’s as diverse as Wellington’s weather. Its beverage programme is all about bold evocative European flavours, Kiwi produce, and fresh floral, herbaceous spirits.

The decor captures the essence of Mount Victoria’s charm. Designed by Kat, the space is a laid-back fresh interior. There are sleek tiled bars, cool textured walls, and wine bottles on display. It’s the perfect backdrop for your dinner dates, catch-ups with mates, and long weekend lunches. There’s also an upstairs area that is available for canapé functions and cocktail events.
